  • Title: Artificial Intelligence Enhanced Kiosk Use to Improve Access to Primary Care

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence has the potential to enhance healthcare provision, particularly in low-resource settings, underserved populations, and remote areas where access to healthcare is limited. This study proposes the deployment of AI-equipped medical kiosks capable of performing many tasks typically handled by primary care providers. These tasks include history-taking, basic physical examinations, rudimentary lab testing, and generating a differential diagnosis. A critical function of these kiosks will be assessing whether a patient requires further consultation with an in-person provider or specialist to ensure comprehensive medical service.  The kiosk will be tied into an integrated care system to assure any such necessary care will be provided.

The initial testing phase will take place in Polk County, Florida a region with a unique demographic profile. The county has a rapidly growing population, a significant portion of which consists of older, retired individuals reliant on Medicare. At the same time, Polk County is experiencing a shortage of healthcare providers, particularly in primary care, and its medical resources are unevenly distributed. This has led to significant challenges in accessing care, even for those with insurance and financial means.

To address these gaps, the study will explore deploying AI-powered kiosks—either permanently or as portable units—in strategic locations to enhance healthcare access and alleviate pressure on the existing medical infrastructure.
