Abstract

Introduction. The discrepancy between the numbers and the estimated burden of cholera is due to the fact that many cases go unreported due to limitations in surveillance systems, lack of laboratory capacity and fears of negative impacts on trade and tourism. The overall objective was to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of cholera surveillance in the four Type A health zones. Materials and Methods. An evaluative study of the Cholera Surveillance System was carried out in four health zones, namely two urban health zones (Goma and Karisimbi health zones) and two rural health zones (Nyiragongo and Kirotshe health zones). This study took into account surveillance data from the year 2019 to 2022 to assess the different attributes of surveillance. Results. Most of the respondents, 84%, carry out epidemiological surveillance in their entity. The average score for the simplicity attribute was 77%.
